Some of the better athletes throughout history such as Aaron Rodgers, Jimmy Butler, Bryce Harper, Albert Pujols, and Ben Wallce, all attended junior college. Why is it that so many of us never knew they went the juco route though? During my time in high school, recruiting became difficult as my junior season of baseball was cut short because of the pandemic. Like so many athletes around the world, many were left optimistic. One of my coaches presented the option to attend junior college as it was the best scenario where I could develop my skills and also face some serious competition. Throughout my two years playing junior college baseball, it was the best experience I could’ve had. From being in the middle of nowhere Illinois, to not having a cafeteria in the school, to the 8 hour van rides, to the 6 am lifts, it created discipline. The simplest things such as a home cooked meal or spending time with friends became a blessing and created a greater sense of gratitude. We weren’t given the same opportunities as NCAA athletes with facilities, living, or transportation, but the competition was at a near division one level. Each day at junior college, it is an opportunity to take someone’s starting spot in front of you so you can showcase your skills, or it’s also another chance to show why you deserve to start while someone else is looking to take your spot. It is a do or die type of competition, and that is exactly why we’re here to give the recognition it deserves. Juco defines grit and we want to give back to the community that gave us that chance.
Social Impact: We want to support athletes to achieve their dreams that align with societal goals of equity and opportunity. Also adding an emphasis on improving athletes' social determinants of health and education.
